How We Party: University of California, Santa Barbara
Welcome back to How We Party, the column where your debaucherous extracurricular education gets a GPA. This week, we head out to the left coast to get weird with the Gauchos of UCSB
UCSB, with its home of Isla Vista, easily has one of the most raging house party scenes in the states. Bolstered by huge events like Halloween, Deltopia, and Extravaganza, Santa Barbara lives up to its reputation as one of the nation’s best party schools.
House parties are the face of raging in Santa Barbara. Any night of the week (I’m serious) has a number of huge raging house parties on Del Playa and other streets. On Friday and Saturday, walking down Del Playa becomes a struggle because of the huge numbers of people looking to rage. Multiple houses throw huge street parties from their porch, never failing to have hundreds of kids making their parents sad in the front yard. Probably one of the, if not most, raging house party scenes in the states.
Ain’t no party like a Southern California house party. They’re a rare breed, and you can’t get anything like it pretty much anywhere else you go. Making it the defining aspect of the school is pretty much an inevitable no-brainer. 9.5/10.
Bars are pretty big on Wednesday and Thursday nights, but overall don’t command much of a presence in the Isla Vista community.
Goes the way of a lot of driving-heavy areas. Bars aren’t going to command as big a pull, especially if there are a slew of options not only better, but hella cheaper. 5/10
Though there aren’t many frats and only 10% of students join a frat, those are the 10% that rage the hardest. Huge seasonal parties such as Adios, Ice Caps and Rumble in the Jungle by Sig Ep always kill it, along with huge day parties by ato such as Young & Reckless. When there isn’t a massive rager at the house, most members have satellite houses along Del Playa, where there will be a massive rager. Not as hardcore as fraternity life at other schools, however.
West Coast fratting doesn’t carry the weird bravado of the lax coast, but it has it’s own flair. A lot of hungover breakfast burritos, and always a good time. Laid back may not get the news and the hype, but its quietly oftentimes the best. 7.5/10
Babes….everywhere. Blondes have just about taken over the school and I am certainly not complaining. Everyone is tan and fit, something that just comes with living on the beach. Always down to get down and live it up.
Yeah. A school in Santa Barbara is gonna do pretty well here. 9/10
Sports Related Raging
Outside of soccer, there isn’t much of a sports rage scene. Soccer games can get pretty big sometimes, like against Cal Poly, and everyone is just absolutely plastered. Water Polo and Lacrosse throw sick ragers and basketball is a pretty big deal, but that’s about it.
Especially tough to compete with big-time LA schools not terribly far away. Soccer’s notably big, but this is a school who knows what they’ve got and works with it. 5/10
I think we all know that Halloween is massive in Isla Vista. But with the police presence there now, it really isn’t what it used to be. What is on the up? Extravaganza. Was absolutely massive and raging with headliners Dada Life and Kendrick. Deltopia? Even better. I hardly remember a thing, but seriously it was absolutely wild. Half naked people just got blacked out by 10am and the streets were flooded by 1 with wasted blonde babes. Really wish i could find a picture but I lost my phone but yep, it happened. Massive.
The climate makes UCSB conducive for HUUUUGE blowouts on blowouts on blowouts. Like all colleges, this will be cyclical–the next big thing will cede to too big a thing, which will cede to the process repeating itself. It will always repeat itself. 9/10
UCSB students live and rage and surf and bang on the beach. Need I say more?
No, guess not. 8/10
OVERALL UCSB HOW WE PARTY SCORE: 7.6/10
