Why You SHOULD Join a Fraternity or Sorority In College: A Rebuttal
I am in a fraternity. I was a student-athlete. I work hard to be a leader on campus.
I’m majoring in both Finance and Management Information Systems. I don’t know why Max felt the need to talk about his height and dick, but to continue the stupid tradition I am 6’3” and wear a 13-14 shoe (Ladies!! wink wink nudge nudge). I would talk about past relationships but I don’t think a forum that gets hundreds of thousands, or millions of views is appropriate. Being Greek has taught me discretion.
Now, there are some things I missed out on as a Greek, I never got to experience the free bowling and pizza nights in the student lounge on Friday nights, going to RA events that encourage bonding through arts and crafts and twister. I also never got to experience not being let into a party because it was closed or full, Greek life here accommodates each other on principle.
Since I am in a Fraternity I was able to experience all of Greek Life's upsides. I have attended invite only sorority events, I go to formals and date parties and mixers. Essentially, I got to drive a Ferrari 458 and park it in my garage because it is mine.
So, I post this writing for anyone in or around college life; please stop blindly listening to bitter GDI’s that did not realize how beneficial pledging would have been until it was too late. Do not let the bullshit you read make up your mind for you. That includes my column, I don’t want anyone to read this and think wow I am definitely going to pledge now. Max made a good point and that was to only pledge if you agree with the core values of the specific group. Affiliate with a purpose, whether it’s to get drunk with good friends or to be a part of something bigger than yourself, make sure it’s right for you, but know that if you dive in the pool, you will never regret it. Nobody looks back after being in a Fraternity or a Sorority and thinks “wow I really should have been a GDI, college would have been so much better.”
As people, use your time in college wisely, because it can be the best time of your life. Think of who will truly have your back once you’ve left college, your pledge brothers like (Gobbles, Shaggy, Towel or whatever stupid name they have) or the random dude in your dorm freshman year who once gave you a cup of noodles. You pledge once but you are a brother or a sister forever, and nobody can take it away from you.
I originally wrote a long-winded final paragraph to explain how awesome Greek Life is, but I decided to tell you my most memorable stupid night of college.
Once my pledge class found out that we were being given a pledge retreat, which is a big deal we got incredibly drunk. We then decided to walk back to campus down a major parkway lined with shitty college town restaurants and stores. Since we were drunk and some of us wanted to smoke we figured the best place was on the roof of a weirdly shaped closed down car dealership. Then we went to Denny’s where my pledge brother blew three lines of kosher salt and passed out on the floor. That was the first time we all knew that we would be friends for the rest of our lives, I can’t explain it to those who have never had the experience, but I can say if you are lucky enough to get a bid somewhere accept it. You will make memories so incredible you can’t describe them.
Greek Life is just more fun, why settle for less?
