I love my job. I will quite literally tell anyone who will listen that I love my job. I get to make a decent living writing and covering the things I love. What more could I ask for?
But, like most things in life, there’s a flip side to that coin. While the internet has allowed me to have a career, the nature of my job has also exposed me to its darker sides. You see, the thing about working on the internet is that you see all of the internet.
Every shooting, every stabbing, every gut-wrenching tragedy that happens on a daily basis comes across your radar at some point. It’s simply the nature of the job. As I like to describe it, you see too much of what’s wrong with the world.
And because of that, it’s easy to become jaded, especially when considering the current state of our society. Every night on the six o’clock news, there’s a story that will make you feel worse about the state of the world — whether it be the opioid epidemic, global warming, far away genocide, or otherwise.
But — and it happens very rarely — sometimes there are those stories that, even for just a second, make you feel like things will be okay. That there are people out there trying to make a dent in the overwhelming dourness that is our current circumstances. That there are stories like these, where regular college students — like you are or perhaps once were — are taking the time out of their lives to bring some holiday cheer to an elderly stranger that they’ve never met in their lives.
Terrence has spent the last 20 Christmas Days on his own.
So #BBCBreakfast, @mrdanwalker and @OldhamCollege wanted to bring him some Christmas cheer 🎄❤️ pic.twitter.com/TapFjtAGbe— BBC Breakfast (@BBCBreakfast) December 12, 2019
Merry Christmas, Terrence, and Happy Holidays to you all. Be decent to each other and maybe we’ll get through.
