Some politicians have called the articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump a “solemn step” and a “somber moment for our nation,” while others called it a “dangerous, dangerous time in America.” One politician went so far as to compare the the impeachment to slavery, Jim Crow and suffrage. But for one Congressman, the impeachment hearings was a great place to watch some golf.

Rep. Cedric Richmond (D-LA) was caught watching golf during an impeachment hearing in the House Judiciary Committee. Not exactly the way you’d like to see your taxpayer dollars being spent, especially since representatives receive a $174,000 salary.

On Thursday night, the impeachment hearings dragged on for an agonizing 14 hours as both sides were completely polarized on the impeachment of President Trump. Around 9 p.m., a C-SPAN camera caught Representative Richmond watching golf on his laptop during the hearings on Capitol Hill.

A closeup shows that the Democratic Congressman from Lousiana was watching the President’s Cup golf tournament. Rep. Richmond was able to watch some live golf that late at night because the tournament was played on the other side of the world at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Melbourne, Australia. Richmond wasn’t missing much because the U.S. Team was losing to the international team, and heading into Day 3, they were down 6 1/2 – 3 1/2.

Who could blame Rep. Richmond for wanting to check in on some golf during this borefest?

The hearings didn’t matter because every member of the House Judiciary Committee voted based on their party, and none of the impeachment debate was taken seriously. No minds were ever going to be changed. The hearings were a platform for politicians to be seen on TV and attempt to get a viral sound bite.

The House Judiciary Committee voted to impeach the President of the United States for the third time in the modern era. The politicians voted on party lines with all 23 Democrats voting in favor of proceeding with impeachment for a charge of abuse of power, and all 17 Republicans voted against it. The articles now go to the House floor for a full vote next week.

Ironically, during the impeachment hearings, Rep. Richmond said: “How do you want to be remembered during this watershed moment in our nation’s history?” Watching golf?

“The time has come to be the winter soldier. The time has come to show the courage of Esther,” Richmond said of the impeachment hearings.

“Democrats on Nadler’s Committee are so ‘solemn’ and ‘prayerful’ about impeachment that they’re watching golf at the hearing,” RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel wrote on Twitter. “This partisan sham has been an absolute waste of the American people’s time.”

Pro golfer Bob Estes understood why Richmond would want to watch the Presidents’ Cup during the hearings. “Even though he’s a Democrat, I’m gonna give Rep. Richmond a pass on this one,” Estes wrote on Twitter.

The impeachment hearings have been so riveting that Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler fell asleep during the proceedings.

The impeachment process against President Bill Clinton and Richard Nixon took 10 months. The impeachment movement against President Trump started only three weeks ago. There will undoubtedly be many more politicians looking for diversions during the upcoming proceedings.
