As I mentioned the other day when I shared a poster, logo and some behind the scenes photos for Marvel’s upcoming Venom movie starring Tom Hardy, I am unreasonably stoked to see this film. The combination of the actor, Hardy, and the character, Venom, is just so ripe for so many awesome things, there’s no way this movie will live up to the hype in my head. (Yes, I am looking at you, Suicide Squad.)

That being said, Marvel has a pretty good track record, far better than DC Comics – even the Sony (Spider-Man) and 20th Century Fox (X-Men) movies they’ve done, while far from perfect, are still better than most DC movies. So I am still holding out hope.

Fueling that fire, besides the aforementioned poster, logo and behind the scenes pics, is the fact that Tom Hardy has been killing himself training for the Venom movie and the fact that over the weekend at Comic Con Experience 2017 in Sao Paulo, Brazil (where Deadpool gave out free tattoos), Hardy dropped some very important knowledge with regard to the plot details we can expect to see when the film is released on October 5, 2018.

Speaking during Sony’s presentation in a video message from the film’s set in Atlanta, Hardy assured fans that he will be bringing the action and some dark humor to the role of Eddie Brock/Venom.

The bombshell though was when Hardy revealed that the movie would be based on the Venom: Lethal Protector series of comics.

So what is Venom: Lethal Protector about?

Comicbook.com has the scoop…

Venom: Lethal Protector was a six-issue miniseries written by David Michelinie and drawn by Mark Bagley, Ron Lim, and Sam Delarosa. The series was published by Marvel Comics in 1993. The series begins with Venom and Spider-Man agreeing to a truce and Venom moving to San Francisco. San Francisco as the setting of the Venom movie was also confirmed by Hardy.

Once in San Francisco, Venom is attacked by the son of one of his past victims and his hunted down by the Life Foundation, who want to study the Venom symbiote and use it for their own purposes. This results in the creation of five new symbiote spawn: Scream, Phage, Riot, Lasher, and Agony.

Comicbook.com also speculates that Carnage, Venom’s archenemy in the comics, is rumored to be the villain of the film and the involvement of the Life Foundation could be used for his origin story.

So… are you as stoked as I am? Hardy certainly seems to be…
