You Know That Tiny Pocket On Your Jeans? It Actually Has A Purpose

I’ve spent my entire life thinking that tiny pocket inside of your jeans was useless. Well, as an adult I figured it was for people to hide drugs inside of. But I never imagined there was a very specific reason that pocket exists. Alas, that pocket used to be used by men all over the world.

There was a time and place when all men carried watches. And not necessarily wrist watches. Many (most?) men would carry pocket watches back in the day:

It’s not about smuggling coins, though you’re free to use that pocket however you like. But the original reason that tiny pocket on your jeans came into existence is that it was used to carry gentlemen’s pocket watches. What I don’t fully understand is why that tiny jeans pocket still exists in jeans made today.

I can’t tell you the last time I saw someone under the age of 80 carrying a pocket watch. They just don’t exist amongst our generation, at least not amongst anyone who isn’t the most über of hipsters. So why do jean manufacturers feel the need to keep using denim in a useless pocket just because that pocket has always existed? Just cut that pocket out. I don’t need it. I won’t miss it. You don’t need it.
