As a huge Grateful Dead fan, I always suspected there was a link between Game of Thrones and the Grateful Dead. The first time I became acquainted with the show a few years ago, I was mesmerized by all the not-so-subtle Grateful Dead references buried in the show — Notable the Direwolves and Weirwood, which are trees in Westeros. Every time I hear about the House of Stark’s precious “Direwolves,” I automatically start humming a few bars of the Grateful Dead song by the same name.
In a Q/A with Salon’s Laura Miller at the 92nd Street Y, Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin acknowledged that he’s a big Deadhead and has references to The Dead baked in the show. The Internet speculation amongst Deadheads can finally be put to rest:
See you in Santa Clara or Chicago with Bill Walton, George?
