Watch Will Smith In The New Trailer For ‘Concussion’ — The Movie The NFL Doesn’t Want You To See

In August 2011, former players brought a lawsuit forth against the NFL which included former Atlanta Falcons free safety Ray Easterling and Hall of Fame linebacker Junior Seau. The lawsuit, which began with 200 former NFL players expanded to over 5,000 by 2015, declared that players suffered head trauma which was directly caused by playing in the NFL. On April 22, 2015, Judge Anita Brody approved a settlement for the NFL to pay at least $900 million over 65-years, plus lawyer fees and interest of $112 million.

Players who have suffered ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig’s Disease), Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s or the brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) would receive greater payouts.

Unfortunately Seau and Easterling never did get to see how they helped bring financial relief to fellow football players struggling with physical, mental and emotional ailments because they both committed suicide before the settlement. They also didn’t get to witness all of the awareness that they helped bring forth with their efforts. They couldn’t have imagined that their actions would garner such attention and interest that Hollywood would make a movie about the dangers of professional football.

But it happened.

In the upcoming movie Concussion, Will Smith plays Dr. Bennet Omalu, a forensic neuropathologist who discovered the first case of CTE in an NFL player when he performs an autopsy on Pittsburgh Steelers’ great Mike Webster. Despite a huge uphill battle against one of the most dominate corporations in the world, Omalu tries to publicize the fatal hazards of playing the most popular and beloved game in America. The movie is based on the eye-opening 2009 GQ article titled “Game Brain” by Jeanne Marie Laskas.

The movie is produced by Ridley Scott and the cast includes Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Alec Baldwin, Luke Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Albert Brooks. Concussion hits theaters on December 25.
