Well. Everything about this sucks. Confirmations from the family are in — Legendary rock star David Bowie has passed away at the age of 69 after an 18-month battle with cancer. The news broke on Facebook with a post from his official Facebook page:
January 10 2016 – David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.

After it was posted, there immediately speculation that it might be a hoax. But reputable sources shortly started confirming the terrible news, including the news director at from Billboard magazine:

Last week, Bowie released a secretive new studio album called “Blackstar,” which received a good deal of press over the weekend.
While the world is just absorbing this devastating blow, there are no words for the brilliant musical talent the world just lost. Incredibly, he just dropped a video for a seemingly-autobiographical song about dying called “Lazarus” just last week.
There is only music for the Starman, now waiting in the sky.
