As mentioned before, the meteoric rise of Vulfpeck over the last few years is easily one of my favorite things currently happening in live music. If there was a freshman list for rad innovations in thoughtful jazz-funk, I’d put Vulfpeck, Snarky Puppy, Lettuce, Turkuaz, and Kamasi Washington at the very top of it. If you get a chance to check them out on what’s left of the festival circuit this summer, do it. Personally, I’m stoked to be front-and-center for their Friday set at Lock’N in late August.
When Vulfpeck drops new tunes, I kinda start freaking out. Earlier today they released visuals for a cover of Joey Dosik’s “Game Winner,” a soulful sports-themed song with Charles Jones belting away on vocals and rhodes. Vulfpeck has had “Game Winner” in their live set rotation for a couple months, but today is the first we get to hear a high quality studio rendition of the jam. Musically, it’s as silky smooth as a stick of Land O’Lakes, making it perfect for those not-so-subtle late night Spotify playlists with titles like “dimmed lights” and “love badger.”
It’s so good to have new Vulfpeck in our lives, Bros.
