Expect bendy screens on your next phone
Believe it or not, your next gadget is probably going to have a flexible screen. No, you probably won’t be able to wrap your phone around your body, which sadly precludes a whole bunch of really awesome/gross pranks. That’s not for years, possibly decades.
On the other hand, the days of dropping your phone and cracking the screen will be a thing of the past, since your phone’s screen won’t have any glass to break.
How does that work? Essentially, everything is encased in a plastic called a polyamide: it makes the screen flexible, and also strong, light, and essentially unbreakable. If it experiences an impact, all it has to do is flex a little to distribute the kinetic force. It’s essentially unshatterable before you get to extreme conditions like dropping an anvil on it, something we’re sure somebody will do.
Oh, and because of the technology it uses, it also consumes way less power, meaning that you’ll be able to run your phone a lot longer without worrying about the battery dying.
Samsung is seeing huge orders for these screens, meaning they’ll be in gadgets across the spectrum as early as the end of the year.
