The beach where Lego keep washing up on shore

Back in 1997, a Tokio Express container ship was struck by a wave the ship captain called a “once in a 100-year phenomenon”.

According to the crew, the massive wave tilted the ship 60 degrees one way and then 40 degrees back in the other direction. The rocking of the boat caused sixty-two containers, destined for America, to topple overboard. The containers were never recovered. This sounds like the start of an ABC show very much like Lost but it’s one hundred percent real.

In one of the containers, its final destination New York City, 4.8 million pieces of Lego. Seventeen years later and Lego pieces are still washing up along the beach in places like Cornwall, Devon, Ireland and Wales. The most ironic part of the story — most of the Lego were sea-themed.

There is a Facebook page dedicated to the Lego which have washed up and the people who collect the toys. Here are some of the best photos from the page.
