Jello shots are a staple of a bad night, so up the ante by making them with UV Sriracha vodka. What’s the worst that could happen?
Guyism Grill has been home to a litany of culinary masterpieces. I’ve been amazed at how well some of the questionable creations have turned out and shocked that there haven’t been more epic failures. Today proved that things don’t always go according to plan.
The original concept was to make a giant Sriracha Jello Shot shaped like a Sriracha bottle. It seemed pretty clever to me at the time. That wasn’t nearly as easy as I had hoped it would be though. Enjoy exploring my failures.
Everything was great at this point. I had a brilliant idea that was going to take over the internet today, including all the ladies of Pinterest. Who wouldn’t want a Sriracha Jello Shot shaped like the bottle itself?
This is where things already started going wrong. I was concerned about not being able to get the Jello out of the bottle without it falling apart, so I split the bottle in half. Two things were a sign of things to come.
1: Cutting a Sriracha bottle is incredibly difficult. I had to abandon the top of the neck altogether because I couldn’t cut through it.
2: I tried to duct tape the mold together so I could pour in the Jello, and spicy red heaven went everywhere.
Then I came up with this much better plan. I was once again patting myself on the back for being so ridiculously creative.
When was the last time you made an arts & crafts project with an egg carton? I’ll bet it wasn’t this intoxicating.
I’m feeling good again. This is going to work out. It should solidify in the bottle and I will have made the greatest Jello shot the world has ever seen.
On my way to do work for the kids, I remember something and lose all faith again. I didn’t grease the bottle, meaning the Jello will likely rip apart when I try to remove it. Pictures never get posted early but I was so set on failure that I figured it wouldn’t matter.
Some hope was restored when the mold came out of the refrigerator and was nice and solid. The Jello shot itself turned out well.
Unfortunately I was correct in my assumption that it wouldn’t want to part with the mold. On top of that, some of the Jello leaked through the top, meaning the neck was almost non-existent.
By the time I got the Jello out of the bottle, this is all that was left. That’s about 1/2 of a bottle with a non-existent neck and a failure for a cap. I carved a Sriracha Jello jiggler out of the scraps and called it a day.
The upside, if you can call it that, is that the Sriracha Jello Shots turned out pretty well. They’re a good consistency and taste much better than expected. Sriracha vodka doesn’t taste very good, but when combined with cherry jello only the spice shines through and it’s fantastic. Unfortunately there’s no easy way to eat that blob of jiggling booze. Spoons for everyone!
My 3rd attempt worked much better. It’s still not stable enough to stand vertically though, effectively defeating the purpose.
Just so it isn’t a complete loss, here’s the recipe for basic Sriracha Jello Shots
- 3oz Jello
- 6oz boiling water
- 8oz UV Sriracha Vodka
- 2oz cold water
- Combine 2oz water and 8oz vodka and put in refrigerator.
- Bring 6oz water to a boil.
- Combine boiling water and Jello powder in bowl.
- Stir until gelatin is completely dissolved.
- Add cold water/vodka to bowl and stir again.
- Pour mix into individual shot glasses.
- Refrigerate for 4 hours or until set.
- Eat as many as you can (responsibly).
