Why is this SNL backstage skit with Lena Dunham funnier than the live skits?

Writing a weekly comedy show isn’t easy. I get it. It’s just kind of odd when the backstage stuff posted to YouTube is funnier than most of the live skits on Saturday night.

Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant and Lena Dunham are hanging out backstage when an enthusiastic Vanessa Bayer asks if they want to see the new Beyonce dance she learned. They don’t, but when does that ever stop people?

Alright, the skit isn’t fall down hilarious, but it’s much funnier than most of the skits on Dunham’s episode. It was funnier than ALL of the skits on Jim Parson’s episode. Why not include these segment in between skits? It’s kind of fun seeing the cast being “themselves” once in a while.

Eh, what do I know, I’m just a fan of almost thirty years.
