18 Facts About New York City That Even New Yorkers Don’t Know

New York City, New York State is home to 8,175,133 people living on top of each other across 305 square miles. That means things get pretty weird around here from time to time, like when a guy who clearly belonged in Bellevue started streaking, running down 14th street naked while screaming about Rafael Nadal during the U.S. Open (I witnessed this once).

That said, there are plenty of strange facts that you probably didn’t know about Gotham. Like all those parks you enjoy on sunny Saturdays? They’re cemeteries, particularly Washington Square Park, where 20,000 bodies are interred. Also: Madison Square Garden hasn’t paid property taxes since 1982. That’s some -ish if I’ve ever heard it.
