The 2017 ‘World’s Ugliest Dog’ Is A Neapolitan Mastiff With So Many Wrinkles You Can Barely See Her Eyes

The 2017 World’s Ugliest Dog competition was held last weekend and a Neapolitan Mastiff named Martha took home the $1,500 prize and title being named the ugliest dog on the planet. I’m a bit shocked that Martha won because she’s not at all ugly, and she’s actually one of the better-looking dogs I’ve seen in a while.

The World’s Ugliest Dog competition is usually won by deformed hairless Chinese Crested dogs, which looks like Gremlins that have been left in the sun for far too long. Chinese Crested dogs are genuinely hideous, so it makes perfect sense that they’d win Sonoma’s annual ‘World’s Ugliest Dog’ competition every year, it doesn’t make any sense that Martha would win because she’s gorgeous.

Martha is 3-years-old and weighs 125-pounds, which is actually on the small side for Neapolitan Mastiffs. She’s a rescue dog who was nearly blind when she was found and has since undergone multiple surgeries to restore her eyesight. If the breed looks familiar, Neapolitan Mastiff was the same type of dog owned by Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter series:

A 16-year-old Brussels Griffon-pug mix came in second this year, and a 14-year-old Chinese Crested-Harke mix that flew all the way from the United Kingdom came in third place.

The dogs were judged on 4 criteriums: audience reaction, first impressions, personality, and unusual attributes. The crowd was in love with Martha from the moment she lumbered out onto the stage and immediately laid down to take a nap and rip gassy farts in her sleep.

By winning the 2017 World’s Ugliest Dog competition, Martha was sent home with $1,500 and will soon take trips to NYC to appear on the morning talk shows, and of course the honor of being crowned the ‘World’s Ugliest Dog’ for 2017.
