Photo Of Rescue Dog’s Adorable Smile Goes Viral, Police See It And Put The Pup On Death Row

Dan Tillery of Michigan adopted his two-year-old dog named Diggy last week and shared a photograph on Facebook of his new best friend smiling from ear to ear. This photo went viral for all of the right reasons: it shows a rescue dog who was once in need of a home beaming with joy and pride to have the companionship of his new best friend and owner, Dan.

It’s also a very adorable picture, one that has been shared worldwide by proponents of pet adoption in favor of purchasing from a breeder, as well as owners of this specific breed who hate that pits have been unfairly demonized by society (though Diggy isn’t a full pit, he’s an American Bulldog mix). Here are the photographs that have gone viral:

Here’s where the story takes a dark turn: Dan Tillery lives in Waterford Township, Michigan, a town that has a total ban on pitbulls. Upon seeing the photograph of Diggy the local PD notified Mr. Tillery that he had to remove Diggy from his home within 3 days or they would be taking his dog to a local animal shelter, a kill shelter, because of the township’s ordinance against this breed.

Even though Diggy is in fact an American Bulldog mix the police responded with (via NYPost):

“[The cop] said, ‘You know, we don’t really need much more than I think he’s a pit, and that’s enough . . . You have three days to have him out of your home,’ ” Tillery said to CBS Detroit.

Dan Tillery has taken his adoption papers that prove Diggy is an American Bulldog mix to the City of Detroit Animal Control and Welfare agency, but as of the time of reporting that agency has yet to respond, and this isn’t surprising from an agency whose first response was ‘we think he’s a pit and that’s enough’.

It’s complete and utter bullshit that this town has an ordinance banning pitbulls in the first place, or any dogs for that matter, but I won’t harp on that too much. Furthermore, it’s unfathomable that these fucks can say ‘we think it is and that’s enough’ when there’s proof that this rescue dog is not a pitbull.

The silver lining here is that Dan Tillery’s story has gone viral on Facebook, with pictures and videos being shared like wildfire showing just how sweet of a dog Diggy is:

It’s unclear if the local township will bow to the public’s demands that Diggy be allowed to stay at home, where his is happy in his loving environment. I just hope that the police do the right thing in this instance and read the goddamn papers and see that he’s not even a pit in the first place.
