It’s called casing the joint.

When you are planning on committing a robbery, you scope out the place you wanna hit beforehand. See where its weaknesses are and determine if there’s anything that could make the crime you are planning on committing impossible to successfully complete.

Two robbers in France failed at this most basic task of pre-crime, trying to steal from a McDonald’s that had 11 elite French police officers in there, who specialize in these exact situations.

Whoops! Via Connexion:

There were about 40 diners in the branch of McDonald’s in Besançon, in the eastern Doubs department, when two criminals entered late on Sunday. One fired a warning shot, while the other raided the tills.

Unfortunately for the pair, 11 of the restaurant’s clientele were off-duty members of the Groupe d’intervention de la Gendarmerie nationale (GIGN), elite police who specialise in counter-terrorism and hostage rescue.

They waited until the robbers were leaving the restaurant so that the other customers would not be in danger, but then gave chase, Besançon public prosecutor Edwige Roux-Morizot said yesterday.

One, who was carrying around €2,000, was captured almost immediately as he stumbled while attempting to escape, while the other was shot in the abdomen by one of the elite forces and arrested.

They are both now in the hospital, and both have been charged with armed robbery.
