Californians Are Calling For California To ‘Calexit’ The United States After Donald Trump’s Win

Yesterday was a big day at the polls for the State of California. They legalized marijuana! They increased the cigarette tax! They banned plastic bags! They elected Kamala Harris to the United States Senate, who is now the second Black woman ever elected to the U.S. Senate.

That said, many in left-leaning California aren’t happy about the results of the U.S. Presidential election in voting Donald Trump into the White House. The solution is being called a “Calexit” in the form of succession from the United States of America. There’s actually an official movement called “Yes California” that’s leading the charge for California Independence. If you look back at the history of the old California Republic, you could even argue there’s a historical precedent for Calexit.

One of the Californians leading the charge is venture capitalist and Hyperloop One co-founder Shervin Pishevar. He’s an early investor in Uber and AirBNB, amongst other tech success stories. He argues that, independently, California is the sixth biggest economy in the world. via CNBC:

Pishevar tweeted Tuesday night as the election was unfolding that he will be “announcing and funding a legitimate campaign for California to become its own nation,” if Trump won the race.

“It’s the most patriotic thing I can do,” he said. “The country is at serious crossroads. … Calling it New California.”

“We can re-enter the union after California becomes a nation,” he said. “As the sixth largest economy in the world, the economic engine of the nation and provider of a large percentage of the federal budget, California carries a lot of weight.”

He said the country needs to “confront the systemic problems that this election has exposed.”

Many Left Coasters seem to be on board with the idea:

Here’s a more realistic economic view of what a Calexit would *really* mean:
