Science Finally Answers The Burning Question: ‘Can You Actually Outrun A Fart?’

At some point in your life you’ve tried to fart and run away so you didn’t have to smell it, but is that even scientifically possible? Now we have the answer thanks to the wizards over at AsapSCIENCE. (They’re really doing the Lord’s work, those folks.)

According to them, skatole, one of the chemicals that make farts smell like, well, farts, moves pretty damn quick. Like Usain Bolt quick.

Says the narrator of the video, “If we use the kinetic theory of gases, assume that the fart is at body temperature, and then we plug in the molar mass of skatole, we calculate that the smelliest skatole may be traveling around 243 meters per second.”

That’s around 797 feet per second for those of us who still don’t understand the metric system (F yeah, America).

So, basically the answer is no, but it doesn’t mean we still can’t try. How else are you going to be able to blame it on someone else?
