Douchey NYC Hotel Tells Navy Officer She Can’t Come In Because Her Uniform Violates The Dress Code

Sometimes I love New York City and am proud to call it my home. Sometimes I fucking hate New York City and can’t wait to get out of this smug, expensive, douche-filled urban rat nest. This is one of those things that will make you hate New York City, like that drunk trust fund brunch brat who screamed about his dad owning half of Manhattan.

The Standard Hotel is a staple of Manhattan’s Meatpacking District. It’s the hotel/club where Solange Knowles infamously opened up a can of whoop-ass on Jay-Z. It sceney and “cool” and generally a revolving door in the social lives of many who live and play in Lower Manhattan — There’s a beer garden underneath it that’s kind of chill for day drinking, though the beer is so fucking expensive that it’s kind of nauseating. I think almost every nightlife or travel guide describes it with adjectives that make me want to puke: “swank,” “hip,” “sceney,” “modern,” “trendy.” Barf. Barf everywhere.

This past weekend was Fleet Week in NYC, when Navy sailors and officers hit up the bars all up and down Manhattan over Memorial Day Weekend. It’s a fine New York City tradition. Magical things like this scene happen quit frequently!

Bars and restaurants are always incredibly respectful and accommodating, as they should be. Except at the Standard Hotel, where a bouncer turned on the douche nozzle hard to a Navy officer in uniform. Way to live up to the douchey elitist New York stereotype, assholes. How much more smug could you be?

Via the NY Daily News:

The sailor was blocked at the elevator to the Top of The Standard lounge around 8 p.m. Saturday when she arrived with three others who wore cocktail attire, one member of the spurned group told the Daily News on Monday.

“We walked in, went to the elevator and were stopped by a doorman who said, ‘Hey man, there’s a dress code,’ said Ryan O’Connor, the husband of the sailor’s cousin. “I said, ‘Wait, are you rejecting us because someone is in a service uniform?’ He kind of rolled his eyes and wouldn’t budge.

“I was wearing a $400 blazer and dress shoes. We were all dressed nice. The only person sticking out was the Navy officer,” he said. The sailor requested anonymity.

“We were all shocked and upset,” he said. “This was Memorial Day weekend and walking distance from Ground Zero. This should have been a no-brainer.”

That’s absolutely appalling. I actually walked past the Standard just a few hours before this on Saturday because I wanted to see what the Fleet Week scene was like on the Hudson River. There were plenty of sailors in line for the door/elevator for the Top of The Standard at around 6:00pm. I wonder if they singled her out specifically because she was a girl not in a cocktail dress? If so, that’s even worse. The Standard did the usual damage control, adding that they’ve “invited the officer back and will take care of her and her friends and ensure their satisfaction.”

“We most certainly do appreciate and take a lot of pride (in) all the young people giving their lives to defend our nation,” manager Nayara Branco wrote to the family.

“As per regular protocol, our team at the Top of The Standard is instructed to enforce a dress code — which obviously should not apply to military uniforms. Once again, our sincere apologies for the miscommunication at our end, the issue has been brought to all of our team’s attention and it will certainly not repeat itself,” the manager at Top of The Standard & Le Bain said.

That’s nice that they’re going to make it up to her, but it shouldn’t have happened in the first place.
