How many cups of coffee do you guzzle in a day, chasing that elusive caffeine high? Three? Four? Multiple pots? Are you mainlining some right now?
Nestle, the delicious chocolate people, are working on a coffee that will keep you humming on a high for hours.
Scientists at Nestlé Research Center in Lausanne, Switzerland, have collaborated with EPFL and ETHZ on new research, published in Nature Communications, which could accelerate the development of such foods or supplements.
The research focused on ‘cubosomes’, which mimic natural structures present in the body. These are made of lipid molecules and water, and can release nutrients or medicines in the human body in a controlled fashion.
The scientists used 3D microscopy to accurately map the inside of cubosomes for the first time. The aim is to adapt cubosomes, by placing active ingredients in different parts of their structure, and changing their structures to tune the release.
You probably needed three cups of coffee just to get through all that jibber jabber. It just means the coffee will be slow-release instead of blasting you out of a cannon only to leave you crashing down to earth.
