President George W. Bush And Bono Have Improbable Bromance

Former President George W. Bush and U2 frontman Bono would seem as strange bedfellows, but here they are being BFFs. Dubya posted a photo of his new best friend on his Instagram with the caption:

Bono is the real deal. He has a huge heart and a selfless soul, not to mention a decent voice. @laurawbush and I are grateful he came to the ranch to talk about the work of @thebushcenter, @onecampaign, @PEPFAR, and our shared commitment to saving lives in Africa.

Bono met with President Bush and his wife Laura at their Texas ranch to discuss how their humanitarian efforts to combat disease and poverty in Africa could be even greater.

Bono posted the same photo on the Instagram of the ONE Campaign with the caption:

More than 11 million people are alive today thanks to this man’s creation of PEPFAR, the U.S. AIDS program that has been saving lives and preventing new HIV infections for over 10 years, with strong support from political leaders right, left, and center. That progress is all at risk now with President Trump’s budget cuts, which will mean needless infections and lives lost. – Bono

ONE, which Bono co-founded, describes itself as “a campaigning and advocacy organization of nearly eight million people around the world taking action to end extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa. We believe the fight against poverty isn’t about charity, but about justice and equality.”

Bush’s administration launched PEPFAR (President’s Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief) in 2003 to “address the HIV/AIDS pandemic that threatened to wipe out an entire generation on the continent of Africa.”
