Hold on to your dicks — which, coincidentally, can also be transplanted onto someone else — because the world’s first ever head transplant is about to happen.

Also, I guess, hold onto your heads, since there might soon be a black market for those.

Valery Spiridono, of Russia, suffers from Werdnig-Hoffmann disease, a form of spinal muscle atrophy. He has volunteered for the procedure, despite the fact that an unsuccessful attempt would kill him.

“When I realized that I could participate in something really big and important, I had no doubt left in my mind and started to work in this direction. The only thing I feel is the sense of pleasant impatience, like I have been preparing for something important all my life and it is starting to happen.”

Italian doctor Sergio Canaver is set to perform the surgery, which he estimates will take 36 hours to complete and will require nearly two years of planning. Both Valery’s head and the donor body will be essentially frozen for the procedure, to survive the long period without oxygen.

Then… reanimated zombie Valery. If it goes well, that is.
