Attention, European Athletes: Now Might Be a Good Time to Cool Down the Racist Tweets

By 07.25.12

Euro 2012 saw Mario Balotelli facing “monkey” chants nearly every time he touched the ball during the final, and then there were the chants directed at Dutch players, Czech players, and, of course, the tweets directed at England's Ashley Cole. Now, we're going through this crap again.

Greece's triple jumper Voula Papachristou was expelled from the Olympics today for Tweeting: “With so many Africans in Greece… At least the West Nile mosquitoes will eat home made food!!!” Which in the grand scheme of things, isn't the worst thing anyone has said. However, as Deadspin's Barry Petchesky notes, Papachristou is a known supporter of Greece's Golden Dawn party, which is so far-right it's loosely defined as a Neo-Nazi political group. So Greece was just covering its bases here.

This is all too bad, both because Papachristou threw away something she worked her whole life for by writing something stupid, and because she happens to be pretty damn hot. Oh, well. There goes one piece of eye candy at the Games.
