These Are The 7 Best ‘This Is SportsCenter’ Commercials Since 1994

While ESPN’s SportsCenter has suffered from a drop in ratings, it’s still the most preeminent sports news show on TV, even if their reporters are falling asleep mid-broadcast. However, ESPN would be wise to produce a series based on the clever This is SportsCenter commercials created by Wieden+Kennedy. The ads are deadpan mockumentary at its best; tipping the cap, winking the eye, and nudging the elbow at various idiosyncrasies of sports culture.

Since the first spot in 1994 when Cam Neely and Roger Clemens were trying to find SportsCenter’s headquarters, there have been hundreds of famous athletes featured. I had the task of narrowing it down to the best seven, which you see above. Of course, this whole list could be just Scott Van Pelt and everybody would be happy. It’s why ESPN tabbed him to head up the late night episodes of SportsCenter. But, that’s not enough. Just hand over the reins, give him full control. Make ESPN fun again.

Previously, we’d praised ‘This Is SportsCenter’ spots starring Jordan Spieth, GronkYasiel Puig, Left Shark, Stuart Scott, Stephen StrasburgJimmy Graham and Victor Cruz.

This might be the most controversial list in the history of lists, so I fully expect major backlash. Here were some other notable spots that just missed the mark…

There was Lance Armstrong pre-PEDs powering the entire office building with his cycling…

Drew Brees causing a scene with his Mardi Gras party bus…

LeBron James getting his seat taken by Scott Van Pelt…

Dwyane Wade exercising his “final cut” clause for highlight packages…

Tony Romo throwing an office party and not inviting SVP…

David Wright relaying secret meeting plans…

Alexander Ovechkin possibly being a Russian spy (which was twist on Albert Pujols being a machine)…

Buster Posey trying to shake a nosy ump…

Clayton Kershaw firing pencils…

Henrik Lundqvist translating for the Swedish Chef…

Let me know the biggest omissions in the comments because I frickin’ LOVE constructive criticism.
