“If I stop pushing you, if I stop demanding of you, if I stop getting on you, then I probably don’t think you have much to offer.” Jon Gruden has made a career inspiring fans and professionals alike with his zany enthusiasm. Constant improvement is a theme that the former head coach-turned broadcaster, once saying “you never stay the same. You either get better or you get worse.”

The high standards and tireless work ethic Gruden preaches daily has seemed to rub off on his 23-year-old son, Deuce. Deuce is a 5’6” powerlifter who just secured a gold medal for the 183-pound weight class at the IPF World Classic Powerlifing Championships in Belarus.

Deuce makes time for powerlifting in between fulfilling his duties as an assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Washington Redskins. He recently graduated from Lafayette where he was a running back who posted modest stats–16 carries, 46 yards over final two seasons.

Jon said of his son’s huge achievement:

“I took pride in trying to be as strong as I could. I never got anywhere in the same zip code as this guy. His mother is a physical-fitness freak. Weightlifting to Deuce is like football to me.”

Congrats to the Gruden’s for being a family full of savages.

Matt’s love of writing was born during a sixth grade assembly when it was announced that his essay titled “Why Drugs Are Bad” had taken first prize in D.A.R.E.’s grade-wide contest. The anti-drug people gave him a $50 savings bond for his brave contribution to crime-fighting, and upon the bond’s maturity 10 years later, he used it to buy his very first bag of marijuana.
