Hope Solo Was A Really Good Sport About Losing To Sweden; Just Kidding, She Called Them ‘Cowards’

Here’s a shocker. Hope Solo of the U.S. women’s soccer team said something controversial.

After being knocked out of the Olympics in the quarterfinals by Sweden on Friday in a 4-3 shootout, Solo ripped into the Swedish team in about as an unsportsmanlike way as one can.

Solo said, among other things, “I’m very proud of this team. But I also think we played a bunch of cowards. The best team did not win today. I strongly believe that.”

Here’s the full quote…

The Pia she is referring to is Pia Sundhage, who coached the USWNT to gold in 2012, only to leave that post to go coach Sweden. Oh, by the way, Sweden is undefeated at 2-0-2 against the US since Sundhage took the job.

Sounds like sour grapes to me, but what else would we expect from Hope Solo?
