Miami Herald reporter Manny Navarro tweeted out this video of Michael Irvin’s son, Michael Irvin II (not Jr.? uh, okay) running a route during a one-on-one drill at Miami Hurricanes football practice. If you listen closely, you can hear a coach call the route “horsesh*t” and “awful” before Irvin II makes a juggling, one-handed catch.

I’ve watched a lot of football in my day and I have to say that is a pretty lackluster route. I’m not even sure what to call that route. A shady fade? A gross post-corner? Not even a glorious grab could calm Coach’s red-hot anger. This is how I imagine the discussion between Irvin II and his coach following that play.
IRVIN: But, Coach, if I can pull off one-handers like that–
COACH: Well, if you ran a crisper route, you wouldn’t have to make a circus catch, would ya?
IRVIN: You’re right, Coach. Thanks for being the authoritative father figure I need in my life. (Awkwardly goes in for hug and receives no reciprocation)
Meanwhile, wasn’t Michael Irvin I one of the best route-runners in the league? With Dallas, he’d run that same damn route a dozen or more times a game and Aikman would put it on him in basically the same spot every time. Maybe all Irvin I’s powers came from that gargantuan mouthpiece. Irvin II should pick one up.
Irvin II is a freshman tight end standing at 6 feet, 3 inches, and weighing in at 230 pounds. He committed to The U in July 2015. According to his player bio on Miami’s official athletics site, Irvin “helped guide St. Thomas Aquinas to second straight FHSAA 7A Championship in 2015” and picked the ‘Canes over scholarship offers from Georgia, Michigan and NC State.
