Michael Sam Invited To ‘Raw’ By Stephanie McMahon — For Some Reason

WWE

Over the long weekend, Michael Sam was cut by the St. Louis Rams. Even after a better-than-decent preseason, the first openly gay NFL player is out of work.

No organization has expressed interest in signing Sam to play football. One organization, outside the NFL, is interested in bringing Sam in for an interview. The interview would most likely take place in a wrestling ring, either before or after one sister tells the other sister she wishes she dies in the womb.

Stephanie McMahon and the WWE invited Michael Sam to appear on next week’s Raw in Baltimore. She even penned a letter to the out of work defensive end, calling him a role model, and giving him the chance to speak of his struggles to succeed.

Exhibiting class and dignity rarely shown in professional sports, Michael Sam, WWE invites you to next Monday’s Raw to speak of your struggles to succeed, lessons you have learned along the way, the courage it takes to be yourself and the prospects of your continued journey.

You are a role model, who, by example, can encourage everyone to stand up and openly be themselves.

Signed,
Stephanie McMahon
CBO, WWE

WWE has always been incredibly tolerant (as far as we know) in embracing gay athletes and supporting gay rights. Though this feels way more like a publicity stunt than anything else. Sam certainly doesn’t need a podium to discuss this sudden career hurdle. He could call almost every major news organization on the planet and they’d mic him up within the hour.

Sam has yet to accept the WWE’s offer.
