December is a month filled with plenty of traditions, but one of the ones I look forward most is the outpouring of lists and graphics dedicated to summing up everything that happened in the past year. The advent of the 24-hour news cycle has made it incredibly easy to forget major trends and stories almost immediately, and I love consuming anything that makes me think “Oh right, that was a thing.”

For example, I totally forgot The Juice was set lo0se back in October until I saw this list of the most Googled athletes of 2017 that was put together by Dana Rebecca Designs.

Floyd Mayweather might have beaten Conor McGregor in their bout in August, but at least the Irishman can claim some sort of victory over his opponent. It might be the Year of the Rooster according to the Chinese calendar, but if internet searches are any indication, it was really the year of the Tiger Chest Tattoo.

The designers responsible for the first graphic also put together a map of athletes who didn’t manage to crack the Top 10 but were still heavily searched for by the residents of each state. It turns out more people are living in the past than you might think.

There are plenty of surprises on the map, but it’s hard to top Montana’s interest in a retired quarterback who has literally no connection to the state besides his last name. I’d also love to know how Barry Sanders and Emmit Smith managed to get their names on here, but I guess I have to come to terms with the facts that there are just some mysteries in life that will never be solved.
