Randy Moss was inducted into the Minnesota Vikings’ ring of honor this week, and at a press conference on Wednesday, he was asked what he would say to Dennis Green if he were still around today. Green passed away last June from sudden cardiac arrest at the age of 67.
As he stood before reporters, Vikings front office members and staff as one of the greatest receivers to ever live, Moss fought off emotions when talking about his late coach.
“I don’t know, man,” said Moss, before becoming overcome with emotion. “I was 6 years old playing this game. On draft day, I really don’t know why I was treated the way I was treated on draft day, but Coach Green gave me an opportunity, man. And I told him, ‘Coach, you’re not going to regret this.’
“So, you ask me what I would say to him. Man, I’d probably just fall in his arms and give him a hug. There’s no words that I can tell him.”
Despite being one of the best players in the 1998 draft, Moss was passed up 20 times due to perceived character issues, when Coach Green and the Minnesota Vikings picked him up at 21. The rest is history. Moss had a record-setting first season, recording 69 catches for 1,313 yards and 17 touchdowns – en route to receiving Rookie of the Year honors.
