‘Ricky Williams Takes The High Road’ — A Look At How The Ex-NFL Player Is Thriving In The Legal Cannabis Industry

The name Ricky Williams conjures up a lot of emotions for football fans. In 2002, he was the NFL’s leading rusher with 1,853 yards, earning him a trip to the Pro Bowl. But when the Heisman Trophy-winning Dolphins running back failed four NFL drug tests for marijuana a few years later, Williams became synonymous with the idea of a professional athlete squandering his chance in the spot light.

That was 10 years ago. The stigma around cannabis use is changing thanks to widespread medicinal and legalization efforts. Now Williams is a thriving ganjapreneur, most recently announcing that he’s opening a 420-friendly gym in San Francisco.

Williams relationship with marijuana is the subject of “Ricky Williams Takes the High Road,” a Sports Illustrated Film set to debut on July 13. The first trailer was just released.

“It’s kind of true but not in the way people say it — That I quite football to go smoke weed,” Williams explains to SI. “I was in the NFL, I was making a lot of money. I should have been happier. For some people that makes them happy. But I was looking for something different…”
