Rookie Steph Curry Once Tried To Talk Smack To Kobe Bryant’s Face And It Was NOT Received Well, According To Curry

Talking smack is an integral part of any sports game – or at least it was back when I played rec soccer in elementary school. Do you have any idea how many times kids on the opposing team threatened to shank 8-year-old me? Granted, it was an inner city league and I’m completely making this up for the sake of having a “relatable” story at the beginning of this post, but go ahead and picture it anyway: a herd of small children carrying shivs carved from juice boxes. That’s some Children of the Corn shit right there, except in this scenario I’m under five feet tall and can’t go around punting them in the face like I could now.

As for when rookie Steph Curry tried to smack talk on the court, let’s just say it didn’t go so well. No, he didn’t get stabbed or arrested for child abuse (can you get arrested for child abuse if you’re a child abusing another child? Hmmm), but he tried swingin’ his dick out onto Kobe Bryant’s face with probably the lamest attempt at talking shit ever heard. Via GQ’s Clay Skipper interviewing Curry:

This being Kobe’s last All-Star game, do you have a favorite Kobe memory?
Our rookie year we were playing at Oracle and they had a 3-point lead down the stretch. He got fouled, going to the free throw line to ice the game with two free throws. As he’s walking from one end of the court to the other, I’m this rookie that’s just kind of living in the moment and I walk up to him as he’s walking to the free throw line: “Hey, man, you nervous about these free throws?” The look he gave me was so just mean and cold. Just like, “What are you talking about? Get out of my face, you dumb rookie.” He obviously made the two free throws and they won. I’ll remember that look he gave me forever.

I can see it now: Curry throws out that line with a smile because he thinks he’s funny, making Kobe’s face turn into a sneer that would make onlookers think Curry had just ripped ass and shat in his warm-up jersey back in the locker room. Oh, how a simple look can create endless nightmares…or at least fun blog posts.
