I don’t have any quantitative data to back this up, but based on anecdotal evidence, it seems like soccer players get more things thrown at them by fans than athletes in any other sport. Whether it’s dodging road flares or the occasional paper airplane, you have to constantly keep your head on a swivel for threats both on and off the pitch.
On Sunday, Jozy Altidore netted a goal to put Toronto FC up one against Atlanta United in the second half, and decided to celebrate by taunting the hometown crowd. A fan responded by tossing a cup of beer in his general direction, which barely missed Altidore before landing on the field.
Thankfully, his teammate Sebastian Giovinco was there to ensure the drink wasn’t sacrificed for nothing.
It appears the beer was exactly what Giovinco needed, as he went on to score a beautiful goal off a free kick later on in the half.
