The long anticipated start to Lonzo Ball’s professional career ended unceremoniously last night, thanks in large part due to professional irritator Patrick Beverley. Lonzo finished his NBA debut with a forgettable three points, four assists and nine rebounds in a 108-92 loss to the Clippers. Beverley was in the rookie’s jock strap the entire night, at one point tangling with Ball at center-court before shoving him to the floor. When asked about the encounter after the game, Beverley said “Had to set the tone.” Beverley was grabbing Lonzo’s jersey, shouting words of encouragement in team huddles, and wagging his finger at the 18,997 who came to witness the first game of one of the most hyped point guards in years.

Beverley won. Both on the court and between the ears. ESPN resident blowhard Stephen A. Smith used interesting words to describe what he saw.

Relax dude. But thanks for birthing some wonderful tweets.

The anti-drug people gave him a $50 savings bond for his brave contribution to crime-fighting, and upon the bond’s maturity 10 years later, he used it to buy his very first bag of marijuana.
