It’s peak Black Marlin fishing season right now in Cairns, Australia, and it might be one of the best fishing seasons ever recorded. In the past seven days, there have been THREE grander Black Marlin fish caught in Cairns.
The first Cairns ‘grander’ of the week was caught on November 2nd. That fish was released but it was estimated to weigh 1,100 pounds and was caught aboard the Hellraiser II. Four days later another grander Black Marlin was caught when Capt. Mark Parkinson aboard the Black Label released a fish estimated to weigh over 1,000 pounds (based on measurements). Then today, Capt. Ross Finlayson landed the biggest fish of all.
Capt. Ross Finlayson was fishing on the Top Shot and reeled in a Black Marlin weighing 1,127 pounds. Measurements on this fish are absolutely gargantuan with an 80″ Girth and 137″ Short. I’ve been following for a while now on Instagram and I was absolutely blown away when pictures of his 1,127-pound Black Marlin showed up in my feed. It was then that I decided to check the recent fishing reports in Cairns and discovered that THREE grander Black Marlin had been caught in the past seven days.

Worldwide, there has been 20 ‘grander’ marlin caught this year. That number includes both Blue Marlin and Black Marlin. There were 31 granders caught worldwide in all of 2016. With the fishing as hot as it is right now and two months left in the year I’ll be shocked if the 2017 marlin numbers don’t surpass the 2016 grander count. I’ve never caught a Black Marlin myself, only Blue Marlin. I definitely daydream about catching one of these fish some day and I certainly don’t daydream about that fish being a small specimen. Looks like I’ll have to book a trip to Cairns one of these days if this fishing stays hot.
