Leading 2-0 over Canada in the final minutes of the gold medal game, everything seemed to be going well for the U.S. women’s hockey team. A quick goal cut the advantage in half and tension built.
Desperate for an equalizer, the Canadians pulled their goalie for an extra attacker. An American shot from 3/4 ice on the empty net came tantalizingly close to sealing the deal. But close doesn’t count.
Of course, a quarter of an inch the other way and it would have missed completely.
