USMNT Goalie Gives Up A Humiliating Goal Against Portugal That You Or I Could Save Easily

So by now, you don’t need to be reminded that the United State’s Men’s Soccer Team shit the bed royally. Last month, the USMNT failed to qualify as a top 32 team globally for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia after being eliminated by Trinidad and Tobago, a country with whose population is less than that of San Diego.

The millions and millions of dollars invested in scouting, training, and coaching the U.S. program was essentially all for nothing. In their first game back from their humiliating loss, the USMNT faced Portugal Tuesday night in an international friendly. The game meant nothing in the grand scheme of things, other than a little confidence boost for the Americans if they were able to pull out a W from the big bad Portugalians. Which is now a word.

Insert 22-year-old goalkeeper Ethan Horvath. Hovarth is one of our top young goalkeeping prospects, but a mistake on Tuesday will take some getting over.

With the U.S.A. leading Portugal 1-0 after a goal from 19-year-old Weston McKennie in his debut, Portugal’s Vitorino Antunes sent a cross shot into the box that would easily be saved by you or I. Hovarth let the ball pass through his arms, trickle between his legs, and into the net.

As the Tim Howard era comes to a close, the goaltending job for USMNT is wide open. Ethan Horvath, in his second ever start at keeper, did himself no favors with this muff in the 31st minute.

The U.S.A. would go on to tie Portugal 1-1.
