The World Anti-Doping Agency Just Dropped The Hammer Of Thor On Russia In Regards To This Summer’s Rio Olympics

Russia cheats. For the entire span of history that Russia has been competing in the International Olympics Games they’ve tried to bend and flex the rules by pumping Russian athletes full of performance-enhancing drugs that aren’t yet caught by modern drug tests (and prior to Russia doing this the USSR was all about doping up their athletes). I’m sure that other countries do this as well, but Russia‘s dumb enough to always get themselves caught, and this time around it appears as if the latest Russian athlete doping scandal is blowing the fuck up in their faces.

Today the World Anti-Doping Agency passed their recommendations to the IOC (International Olympic Committee) and it looks bad for Russia, very, VERY bad. We’re like 18 days out from the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio De Janiero, Brazil and the WADA just suggested the IOD completely ban Russia from participating in this year’s Summer Olympics. Sure, Russia performs a lot better in the Winter Olympics but they still do well in the Summer games because they’re such a massive country, and the athletes (doped up or not) have been training their asses off in preparation for the Olympic Games that are less than three weeks away.

Henry Bushnell of Yahoo! Sports reports:

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has recommended that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and International Paralympic Committee (IPC) ban all Russian athletes, regardless of sport, from the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
The IOC said in a statement that it “will now carefully study the complex and detailed allegations.” It has called an emergency meeting for Tuesday to discuss and decide on the participation of Russian athletes in the upcoming Olympics.
“The findings of the report show a shocking and unprecedented attack on the integrity of sport and on the Olympic Games,” IOC president Thomas Bach said in the statement. “Therefore, the IOC will not hesitate to take the toughest sanctions available against any individual or organisation implicated.”
WADA’s recommendation is the agency’s response to its investigation into Russia’s state-sponsored doping program. It published the full results of the investigation Monday in the 103-page McLaren Investigation Report. The report found that Russia’s government and sports governing bodies had engaged in doping that spanned 28 Olympic sports and covered up 312 positive tests.

Damn.

A state-sponsored doping program leading all the way to the top, AND they covered up 312 drug tests that Russian athletes failed. I don’t think it gets much more egregious than that, does it? These are the complete recommendations by the WADA, which you can read here:

1. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) to consider, under their respective Charters, to decline entries, for Rio 2016, of all athletes submitted by the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) and the Russian Paralympic Committee.
2. The International Federations (IFs) from sports implicated in the McLaren Report to consider their responsibilities under the World Anti-Doping Code (Code) as far as their Russian National Federations (NFs) are concerned.
3. Russian government officials to be denied access to international competitions, including Rio 2016.
The Russian National Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) to remain non-compliant under the Code and its staffing and independence to be further reviewed by WADA.
5. The accreditation process of the WADA-accredited laboratory in Moscow (Moscow laboratory) to be stopped.
6. The FIFA Ethics Committee to look into allegations concerning football and the role played by a member of its Executive Committee, Minister Vitaly Mutko.
7. Professor McLaren and his team to complete their mandate provided WADA can secure the funding that would be required.

So basically the WADA just dropped the ban hammer on Russia, suggesting that they back the fuck out of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. They also suggest that FIFA takes immediate action regarding the next World Cup, a tournament that’s to be held in Russia.

Now it’s unclear if the IOC will take immediate action but with these recommendations being published today along with the extensive report any participation and subsequent success by Russia in the Rio Olympics will be met with extreme skepticism. If I were Russia I’d just pull out entirely, cut my losses, and get back to ethical training. But Russia isn’t a country to ever back down to International criticism, so if the world wants Russia out of the Rio Olympics methinks those orders will have to come from the IOC and the IOC alone, Putin’s doesn’t give two flying fucks about some lengthy report.
