Becoming a self-made millionaire is the American dream. They say that money won is sweeter than money earned but I call that poppycock and hogwash. Working hard (and smart) on your way to earning the first million in the bank has to be the best feeling there is (other than the earning your first billion).

Tom Corley is an author who followed the lives of 177 self-made millionaires for his 2016 book titled Change Your Habits, Change Your Life: Strategies that Transformed 177 Average People into Self-Made Millionaires (Buy Here: $15). During his research, Tom Corley discovered that there’s a common trait shared between all self-made millionaires. Here is discussing what that trait is and why it’s invaluable to the success of all self-made millionaires in America:

Here’s the text from the Business Insider Video clip above featuring Tom Corley if you’d prefer to read instead of watching a video:

Tom Corley: There’s a common personality type that’s common among self-made millionaires. I call it “the positive mental outlook.” The reason having a positive mental outlook is actually a prerequisite for being successful is because it allows you to use 100% of your brain.

Researchers have found that when you have a negative mental outlook you actually shut off one-third of your brain. Your prefrontal cortex doesn’t operate optimally so you’re relying on your reptilian brain, and your limbic system, and your brain stem, the older parts of the brain, you don’t want that. And so what happens when you have this positive mental outlook, what I found in my research is it toggles on automatically certain success traits you didn’t even know you possessed: persistence, resilience, you have patience, and focus.

These are some of the success traits that a lot of self-made millionaires told me they had no idea they even had until they really pursued a dream or goal or the goals behind a dream. And they developed a positive mental outlook and that triggered all of these success traits. So having a positive mental outlook toggles on the self-made millionaire success traits and you need that in order to become successful. (via)

It makes sense, right? You’re never going to become a über successful individual if you’re a negative person. For starters, nobody will want to work with you. Beyond that, it’s hard to take risks when you have a negative outlook on life and taking risks is required to become successful.
