‘The Hobbit’ Releases New Trailer, Plus an Update on Its Running Time (and Stephen Colbert Cameo)

by 8 years ago

1. First, a new trailer was released [above]. It will air on TV this fall, and it's only 30 seconds, but we get a better look at the scale of the fight scenes we can expect to go down in Middle Earth come Dec. 14. Plus, thankfully, we get some more Gollum. It's all about the Gollum.

2. Peter Jackson announced the running time today: Two hours and forty minutes. Jackson says this amounts to the shortest movie in the canon but, holy shit! That's high. And this one book is going to be split into three movies? With each, I would assume, running a bit longer than the last, as the original trilogy did? Are you ready to spend what will eventually amount to days of your life watching these movies? You are? Because that's kind of where we're going.

3. Stephen Colbert will appear in at least one of the latter two films of the trilogy, according to the Hollywood Reporter:

Stephen Colbert will make a cameo in Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy, a knowledgeable source confirms to The Hollywood Reporter.

The host of Comedy Central's The Colbert Report is a huge J.R.R. Tolkien and Lord of the Rings fan who reads Elvish. No word on which role he'll play in the franchise or whether it will be a key character or just part of the background.

Colbert's cameo will not come in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, according to the source.

You've got to think they'll go heavy on the makeup here. Otherwise it could be a big distraction.

4. And, it was announced today that Denny's will be running a massive “Hobbit-themed breakfast campaign” tied in with the movie. Menu items include Bilbo's Berry Smoothie, Gandalf's Gobble Melt, Hobbit Slam, Hobbit Harvest Pie, Hobbit Hole Breakfast, and The Ring Burger. As Grantland's Amos Barshad notes, with this move, the restaurant is now more or less overtly marketing itself to stoners, who must have a hankering for second breakfast at 2 a.m. (Also, good call leaving Gollum's Cave Fish off the menu. YEAH, I READ “THE HOBBIT.” WHAT OF IT?)

Finally, if you'd like to see that long-version trailer one more time, I'm not going to stop you:
