Aran sweaters (also called Irish sweaters or cable knit sweaters) get their name because the style originated in the Aran Islands of Connemara, off the west coast of Ireland. A big fishing hub, this warm garment made of sheep’s wool came to also be known as a fisherman’s sweater.
It doesn’t really matter if you know the different names. What’s important is understanding how effective these sweaters are. They’ve kept individuals warm for well over 100 years thanks to the woven sheep’s wool.
Simply put, Aran sweaters are a legacy piece. Every man should have one in their wardrobe.
Right now we like the Wills Aran Cable Crew Sweater. It’s an Aran sweater that preserves its iconic look while also adding in a few modern touches. It’s woven with 100% Patagonia sheep wool and mimics a cable knit pattern similar to the same sweater Steve McQueen wore in The Thomas Crown Affair.
