Musical numbers! Guest stars! A lamp! If there’s one upcoming movie that I’m looking forward to more than any other, it’s Anchorman 2. The long-awaited sequel to the 2004 classic has been grinding through the bowels of Hollywood for years, waiting for all of the important cast members to be ready. In March, the announcement was finally made, and since then we’ve been learning more and more about what’s going down back in the newsroom.

Director Adam McKay has been leaking little tidbits about the script, most recently in an interview with IndieWire. And they’re doozies. First off, Anchorman: The Legend Continues will have at least one and probably several musical numbers. McKay’s original idea for the movie was to do it as a Broadway musical first – the Marx Brothers actually used to workshop their films the same way – and so the new Anchorman will feature singing and dancing. The original had an epic performance of “Afternoon Delight,” so this isn’t terribly surprising.

McKay is also currently revising the script with Will Ferrell and let drop some spoilers about the plot. The narrative captures the rise of the 24-hour news cycle, where the role of the traditional “anchorman” is meaningless in the face of social media and live reportage. How will Ron Burgundy adapt to the shifting media landscape of 2012? Will he… will he Tweet?

Finally, McKay mentioned his desire to amp up the “day players” quotient in the new movie, bringing in as many different actors as he can for brief bits and cameos (like Tim Robbins in the original). This could backfire, but I trust dude’s judgment on how to make it work. Some names floated include Human Giant‘s Rob Huebel and UCB founder Ian Roberts, but you can bet there’ll be more.

Anchorman: The Legend Continues is set for release on October 19, 2013.
