“I usually tend to go with the hot hand and we’ve got two quarterbacks with hot hands.” And with that, Niners coach Jim Harbaugh created a controversy and distraction the team didn’t need. The quote came during last night’s post game press conference following a solid performance from backup Colin Kaepernick. He made the plays he was supposed to and didn’t turn the ball over against a team that thrives on it.
He even dropped in a few passes for good measure.
Back to Harbaugh’s quote which will undoubtedly be the talk of the football world today. There are three schools of thought here.
1) Harbaugh’s a feisty fella who sometimes lets his emotion get the best of him and made an accidental and ill advised comment.
2) Harbaugh knew what he was doing and will use it to motivate Alex Smith.
3) Harbaugh believes Colin Kaepernick is the better option for the team.
I tend to lean towards option 3 here. Despite Alex Smith’s performance in last year’s playoffs, Harbaugh deep down believes it was an anomaly and not what Smith is capable of week in/week out. Kaepernick on the other hand, well, so far so good.
Like many other things in life, the intrigue of the unknown is quite powerful. And no one, including Jim Harbaugh is immune to it.
