Given that it’s American Craft Beer Week, and American brewers have been on race to the top of the IBU mountain for the past couple years, it seems like a good time to learn exactly what that means.
IBU is a term many have heard time and again and just sort of nodded and grabbed the beer with the cool label. It’s actually a pretty useful tool when you are looking to try something new. Aside from style, it’s probably the easiest indicator of the overall picture of a beer. If you don’t like bitter beers, stay low. If you love them, aim high. Obviously that’s not rocket science, but it’s at least a starting point.
Unless you reeeeeeaaaally love hops and bitterness, I’d stay as far away from Mikkeller 1000 IBU. Just trust me on that one.
