Baseball season is upon us, and fans are faced with a tough question: should they buy MLB’s official app, when the MLB wants an outrageous (for an app) price of $15 per season?
The short answer? Yes. “Official” apps tend to be somewhat disappointing, but the MLB tends to show a better grasp of technology than the other leagues (witness the wide availability of MLB.tv), and on this app is where it really shines. This app is actually worth it.
Here’s why: on the free level, it’s got what you expect: scores, recaps, news, schedules and player interviews. But it’s when you get the season pass that the app really shines.
First of all, and useful if you want to catch the game at work, it offers all the radio broadcasts you want. Yep, it’s all you can eat for the entire season, right through the World Series. Needless to say, the stats get more detailed when you give the MLB some money, in the form of pitch-by-pitch updates on games.
And, of course, there’s video: you get highlights from games in progress.
Currently it’s only for iPhone and iPad, but if you’re a baseball fanatic, your league has done right by you with this app.
