“Paterno and Sandusky understood that, in tandem, they could lift each other up professionally.” After flipping through the most important chapters of Joe Posnanski’s Paterno, this is the one sentence that stuck out to me. The one sentence that really shows the relationship between Joe Paterno and Jerry Sandusky.

Posnanski makes an effort, a strong one at that, to show the two weren’t really friends despite working with each other since 1969. He provides quotes from former players and anecdotal evidence as the basis for his argument.

But in the end, even Posnanski could not deny the one reason Paterno kept Sandusky around. It was good for Penn State football, it was good for players, it was good for business and above all, as Paterno states, it was good for the community.

In the face of Jerry Sandusky rumors (rumors Paterno claims were discussed in his presence after the 1998 incident), he chose the business of football over kids. It’s a conclusion most of us reached months ago but not one I thought I’d ever read from Posnanski. A man who seemed to defend Paterno when most turned their back.
