Steve Darcis pulled off the unthinkable today upsetting Rafael Nadal in the opening round at Wimbledon. It is the first time Nadal has lost in the opening round at a Grand Slam event. Nadal appeared to hurt his left leg during the match, favoring it during several points. It affected his ability to pound Darcis with his patented ground strokes.
The point of the match came in the last game when Steve Darcis ran down a Nadal volley for a winner. Take a look.
Darcis has a career record of 73-80 and is currently ranked 135th in the world. According to SI’s Richard Deitsch he is the lowest ranked player to beat Nadal since 2006.
Are we starting to see the decline of Nadal on non-clay surfaces? Perhaps, though I’m inclined to give Nadal the benefit of the doubt the rest of the 2013 season. As for Steve Darcis, well, that dude is pumped up.
