TerraTime is fun, surprisingly useful

by 6 years ago

One of the fun things about writing about gadgets and apps is stumbling across something that just seems like a fun widget, but turns out to be genuinely awe-inspiring and useful. So it is with TerraTime.

TerraTime is pretty simple: it’s a 3D globe with a map of the Earth wrapped around it. Use your finger to spin the globe and it’ll show you where any location on Earth happens to be in the night and day cycle.

The maps are generated with real-time satellite imagery, and frankly, it’s really neat to realize we live in a time and a place where we can look at a semi-3D model of our own planet and spin it with our finger and all of this happens for three bucks.

But after you get used to the toys you discover the app itself is actually incredibly useful. For example, it includes a clock that shows you, visually, how long the night and day will last and gives you precision on solar and lunar events. So if you’re going overseas, you can know if it’ll be night or day when you arrive.

It’s great for travelers, and it’s also a lot of fun. Currently it’s Android only, and available at the Google Play store.
